Orthodontics is a specialty field of dentistry that deals primarily with malpositioned teeth and jaws, their diagnosis, prevention and correction. The purpose of orthodontics is to create a healthy bite with straight top and bottom teeth that properly meet. A good bite makes it easier for you to speak, bite and chew. There are numerous ways to adjust teeth positioning, depending on the needs of the individual patient. At Mount Vernon Dental Smiles, we are proud to offer both traditional braces and Invisalign to our patients.
Invisalign is a removable, virtually invisible orthodontic treatment that involves wearing a series of clear aligners that slowly shift your teeth into position. Treatment with Invisalign starts with making a model of your teeth which allows us to create a detailed treatment plan. Impressions of your teeth are then sent to an Invisalign laboratory where a series of custom aligners are created. You will wear each aligner for about two weeks, 22 hours per day. They can be removed to brush and floss your teeth and before eating and drinking. You’ll be able to enjoy all the foods you love to eat while undergoing orthodontic treatment.
With the current advancements in dental technology, traditional braces are now smaller and more comfortable than ever before. They can effectively correct crowded or crooked teeth, bite issues, and other jaw problems. Traditional braces treatment uses standard metal or ceramic brackets placed on the teeth with an adhesive and connected by a wire. With regular tightening, they provide steady pressure that gradually straightens the teeth and aligns the jaw. Average treatment time for braces is between one and three years, followed by a retainer to ensure the teeth stay in their desired position.
